AHA’S AND BHA’S

AHA’s (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) and BHA’s (Beta Hydroxy Acids) are excellent for giving the skin that refined, smooth look. As some of us know only too well as we age everything slows down! This includes all our bodies biochemistry so when it comes to great looking skin we have to consider certain factors that have slowed down such as collagen production. Infact this is just decreasing at a rate of 1 1/2% a year. Our cell turnover slows down and this means that we hold on to that dead layer of skin and the new skin production coming through can’t glow through like it used too! However its not all doom and gloom as due to advanced skincare really coming to the forefront in the beauty industry in the last few years there are key products and ingredients that can help give our bodies and skin that extra help in speeding up all those processes that are contributing to the ageing process of our skin.

AHA’s and BHA’s can make considerable contribution to transforming your skin by speeding up your skin turnover! AHA’s  essentially break down the the bonds that hold onto the dead layer of skin your face. AHA’s are water soluble.  AHA’s are an exfoliant and are excellent for people with dry and sensitive skin as there is no need for any harsh manual buffing to remove the dead skin layer , it essentially dissolves away. AHA’s are also an excellent humectant in other words they hold moisture well.

BHA’s are more suitable for acne prone skin as they are oil soluble which makes them perfect for treating acne, blackheads and whiteheads. They also have an anti-inflammatory property which makes them excellent at relieving the inflammation brought about by certain types of acne. AHA’S
LACTIC ACID – made from sour milk, suitable for dry, ultra dry and sensitive skin. Smoothes fine lines, wrinkles and rough skin texture, lightly hydrates and plumps skin.MANDELIC ACID – suitable for sensitive, oily and acne prone skins, softens fine lines, wrinkles and pigment left from acne, treats acne and blackheads, regulates oil production.MALIC ACID – suitable for all except sensitive skin types. Helps retain hydration, dissolves dead skin and milia, treats acne, softens fine lines and wrinkle, smoothes texture.

TARTARIC ACID –  suitable for dry skin, contains antioxidant properties, softens fine lines and wrinkles, dissolves flaky skin.

GLYCOLIC ACID – made from cane sugar, suitable for all skin types except for sensitive, lightens hyper pigmentation/sun damage, softens fine lines and wrinkles, dissolves dead skin, smooth texture, stimulates collagen production and brightens.

It is important when working with AHA’s to wear sun factor daily as skin can get photosensitive.

BHA’s
SALICYLIC ACID – Dissolves sebum by seeping deeply into pores and cleaning them . Anti Inflammatory, antibacterial. Can be too drying if overused.
