What is your acid mantle?

It is the hydro-lipid film that is the protective and slightly acidic film that sits on the surface of your skin.
It is the protective layer that discourages the growth of fungi and bacteria and keeps your skin naturally moisturised.
It is made up of essential fatty acids, lactic acid, urocanic acid, pyrrolidine carboxylic acid, oils , water and natural moisturising factors. The pH is around 5.5 making it slightly acidic and maintains the correct balance for your skins optimum function.

What can cause your acid mantle to become impaired?

Dust, Sun damage, pollutants, central heating, air conditioning , harsh treatments and products that alter the natural pH of the acid mantle. These products would be alkaline in nature and therefore affect that perfect pH that maintains optimum skin function.

All of the above factors can break down the inter-cellular lipids between the cell walls creating dry skin conditions and the barrier function of the acid mantle becomes impaired. Bacteria , allergens and other pathogens now have a way through as the protective layer has been broken down and are free to cause chaos creating allergies and break outs.

What can we do to help repair the acid mantle?
